Painting In The Dark

Painting in the dark of the night
Watercolors from the moonlight
Blue, green, and white
Fingertips dyed in stardust
Eyes in rings of Saturn lost
You would think sleep comes at midnight
But sleep flies on the wings of dust
Singing to the endless night
Sleep, sleep, sleep, says an owl past midnight
But if I closed my eyes who would see those blue ribbons of light

I see Pegasus and Orion’s belt
I see Polaris through the mist
Blue, green, and white
Turquoise and silver light
My canvas bathed in moonlight

They say there is a running blue star
Invisible and feather-light
Heading north of the north star
They chase it day and night
But the star on my shoulder sat
The star sighs at candlelight
Sleep, sleep, sleep, says an owl past midnight
But if I closed my eyes who would see those blue ribbons of light
Who would paint these canvas into daylight
